Helene Bradley, the owner of A Touch of Whimsical by Helene, offers “rustic Canadian flags” and other wooden and seasonal creations featuring sports, music and nature themes.
“In fall 2019, I started making my own Christmas decorations and was reminded how much I love working with wood,” says Helene, who adds reclaimed wood is her favourite working material.
“Friends started to give me more reclaimed wood, and I finally found a way to make rustic Canadian flags.”
With her first product line in hand, she began offering the wooden flags online to the delight of local shoppers.
“They did really well, and that gave me the money that I needed to really start my little rustic adventure.”
In business now for about a year, Helene enjoys offering her whimsical creations to new people.
“A little touch of fun always brightens my day,” she says, adding her favourite thing about being an entrepreneur is “seeing the smile on people’s faces as they pick their favourite flags.”
“I want my customers to know they got a good, solid, high-quality product that they are going to enjoy for years—and at a very good and fair price.”
She especially enjoys working with reclaimed wood – mostly pallets – because “every board has its own unique beauty,” she adds.
Helene’s business is just one of many to offer what she calls “a breath of fresh air” to the local economy.
“It brings the small town together as everyone is always willing to give you encouragement along the way.”
For the December Goose Nest Market, Helene will be mostly featuring Christmas decorations, and her latest creation is a cardinal.
“Like the saying goes, ‘May you come to find comfort in and remember: cardinals appear when angels are near,’” adds Helene, referencing a poem by Victoria McGovern.
